What is a Safari?

An African Safari is a famous type of holiday, but for Africans this word only means "a trip". Safaris started in 1850 with a few European explorers and in 1890, "safari" was added to English dictionaries, but they became well-known when American President Theodore Roosevelt went on one in 1909.

A safari in Africa is not an expensive trip taken by celebrities or even science teachers; anyone who is on vacation and loves being outdoors can enjoy one. However, not all activities in Africa, like visiting museums or musical events, are part of this experience; a holiday only becomes a safari when there is contact with animals in the natural world.

Wild animals are everywhere, from woods to deserts and there are huge elephants in India and kangaroos in Australia, but Kenya is the best place to enjoy a safari. In general, people go on safaris in Southern Africa, as Northern Africa is better known for the Sahara Desert and central Africa for its rainforest and gorillas.

When thinking of a safari, people usually imagine a 4x4 car, but there are also walking trails; bikes or small planes are not used.

In the past, a safari was a trip planned to catch animals; nowadays, that is only seen in old books and magazines. Today, the money paid for these trips is used for conservation projects which have become important to protect many species.
